Hands up all my fellow round faces gals out there *insert praise emoji here* I feel ya, those rounded cheeks can mask any shape or definition your cheekbones are trying to give you, or in my case that extra bag of maltesers that is still stuck to my chin #NoRegrets. Before Kim KW and her family made contouring famous, I would always reach for a bronze or contour like shade to give some more definition and shape to my face. Without, all you would see were a couple of big old trampoline cheeks that took over. Now we’re spoilt with an abundance of tools, shades, palettes and YouTube videos all showing us how to achieve a fleeky contour. For anyone else who has a rounder face or is a fan of contour, these are my top picks to achieve those supermodel cheekbone.
The Contour
Without the right contour shade you’re doomed from the start, this is the critical step to ensure that your contouring experience is a positive one. You don’t want anything with shimmer, keep away from those darker shades and check the pigmentation. For the most fuss free faux cheekbone I go for the Kevyn Aucoin Sculpting Powder. This is the most taupe shade I own to mimic the natural contours of your face. For options, grab the Kat Von D Shade & Light Palette as this will have you covered for any occasion or contour need. If you want budget my new favourite is the L’Oreal Sculpt Contour Palette and for something a bit more powerful I’ve been reaching for the Rodial Contouring Powder* which gives me some serious definition.
The Brush
Next up is the tools. Once you’ve locked down the right product you’ve gotta be able to blend it all together. Nothing too big that throws the powder all over your face, instead you need something precise but with enough room to be able to blend out any harsh lines. Daily I use the Bobbi Brown Powder Brush as it has the tapered cut shape to allow precise application that can be easily blended out. If you want something a bit more detailed try out the Real Techniques Contour Brush, it’s slightly more densely packed so gives a stronger payoff in terms of colour but allows you to really define the areas you want. Finally if you want a contour that is going to cut a b***h then you need the Real Techniques Bold Metals Flat Contour Brush. Nothing gives you instant cheekbones quite like this brush.
