Dermatology – Questions Answered

When people have something on their body that they are not happy about, like a scar or rash that just won’t go away, they turn to the medical world to find the answer to their problems. This may be in the form of a dermatology clinic in Edinburgh or elsewhere but the important thing to remember is that no one has to suffer these days. There are answers to most problems but we ourselves have to seek them out.

The Scope of a Dermatologist
We have probably all had really severe sunburn or have suffered with greasy skin that seems to produce blackheads on a regular basis. Psoriasis and verrucas are also irritating and sometimes painful conditions but all are treatable by the dermatologist. As if these were not enough, dermatologists can also deal with things as serious as skin cancer too so this shows the kind of scope they have in their practices.

NHS Treatments
Although some of the dermatology treatments are available on the NHS – through the local GP – some of the more unusual treatments are not. These include microdermabrasion, IPL (intense pulsed light) therapy or chemical peels. These are all considered to be for cosmetic purposes so it is down to the individual to pay for treatment like these.

Untreatable Conditions
Some scars or marks on the skin cannot be treated to make them look better. Instead, there are camouflage creams available to cover up the scar. Vitiligo is a prime candidate for camouflage cream as the pale patches left by the condition cannot be removed. Once the cream is applied, there should be no difference in the tone of the skin from marked to unmarked regions.

The great things about these creams are that they are waterproof so the wearer can even keep it in place when they swim. Once on it lasts for up to eighteen hours on the face but the body cover lasts for several days. Some will also have sun protection built in since the sun can often make matters worse. Creams like this are only available from a GP or the dermatologist.

Treatable Conditions
Even those conditions that we visit a GP for could possibly be treated by a dermatology doctor. For example, skin rashes commonly put down to heat often start to get a fungal infection in them. These will have to be treated quickly if discomfort is to be avoided. A visit to the dermatologist can also uncover why the condition keeps on coming back.

One common problem with larger ladies is that they get a rash under the breast for example. The moisture and skin rubbing together is a prime breeding ground for germs and fungus. Some women have had to take time off work because of this uncomfortable conditions but a dermatologist will apply anti fungal cream or powder and advise how to keep the area dry.

With the queue getting longer for NHS GPs these days, the dermatologist could be a faster way to sort out certain problems.
